Schisandra

Schisandra, which is also known by the name wu wei zi, is one of the most important medicinal plants in traditional Chinese medicine. The Chinese name wu wei zi means “five flavour fruit” because the fruit has a unique combination of the flavours sweet, sour, salty, bitter and pungent.
 
In Chinese medicine the schisandra fruit has been used for thousands of years for the treatment, e.g., of cough, diarrhoea, respiratory distress, loss of memory and sleeplessness. Schisandra is known to us primarily as an adaptogen. Adaptogens help us to cope better with stress situations.
 
In addition, the substances contained in schisandra have antioxidant, liver-protecting, nerve-protecting, immune-stimulating, anticancer, anti-inflammatory and heart-protecting effects.
